Kapoor And Sons is a movie about a family that is headed by a 90-year old grandfather played by Rishi Kapoor. This is indeed one of his best performances to date. He portrays a funny, doting grandfather who craves the attention of his son and daughter-in-law.
His grandsons come all the way from London and New Jersey when he suffers from a heart attack, and the family has the time of their lives being together for some time.
The casting director Panchami Ghavri brought together a neat cast for Shakun Batra to wield his directorial baton. Right from Rishi Kapoor, as the doting grandfather, to the ever-fighting parents Rajat Kapoor and Ratna Pathak-Shah to the sons, Fawad Khan and Sidharth Malhotra to Alia Bhatt.
Panchami surely brought together a delectable talent. The casting here is fresh and promising. This delivers you with an excitement that a lot of other films of the same genre fail to.
Batra’s commendable work can be observed with the treatment of high-tension scenes where tempers fly.
He kept a firm grip on the tempo that makes the scenes hit out at the audience as though it’s all happening right in front of them. That’s a rare thing and it takes immense talent to bring out such scenes. That too not once but thrice!
Alia Bhatt injects enthusiasm and masala in the plot as Tia. Tia is in Connor, Kerala, to rent out her huge farmhouse, where Arjun accidentally runs into her, and Rahul (Fawad Khan) meets her to rent out her place.
Unknown to the brothers and Tia, they both have feelings for her, and things come to a head when Tia tells Arjun about what happened between her and Rahul one drunken night.
The plot is stitched together so perfectly that it seems as if there is a story book unfolding right in front of your eyes.
Though there is not much focus on the love story of Alia and Sidharth but overall, the director has given every character their space on the screen. In the end, rising to a crescendo just like a musical piece coming to its climax, the angst of every character hits you.
Alia Bhatt brought life onto the screen with her effervescent acting. Her character takes a turn towards the end and the Bhatt babe portrayed the range of emotions brilliantly. You can really see the Alia from ‘Highway’ overrule the Alia from ‘Shandaar’.
Sidharth Malhotra and Fawad Khan both put in a fine performance as the two brothers with an everlasting tiff between them. Fawad, doted upon by his parents, is the son who can never be wrong, while Sidharth, is terrifyingly candid.
The best thing about this movie is that it has just two songs that don’t elongate or overshadow the plot. Instead, they enhance the on-going scene.
In conclusion, Kapoor And Sons are supple and smooth, with lots of rough edges, some high and lows, a complete family movie.
