Saira Blair (born July 11, 1996) is an American student and politician from Martinsburg, West Virginia. After the 2014 general election, she became a Republican Party Delegate-elect in the 59th district of the West Virginia House of Delegates. She elect as West Virginia’s Saira Blair America’s youngest state Lawmaker.
Blair is a freshman studying finance at West Virginia University. She plans a career as a financial advisor and does not plan to continue a career in politics. Blair’s father is Craig Blair, a Republican member of the West Virginia Senate.
In the May 2014 Republican primary, she defeated West Virginia’s delegate Republican incumbent, Larry Kump. Blair defeated Kump by a vote of 54.5 percent to 45.5 percent in the district, which encompasses portions of Berkeley County and Morgan County.
In November 2014, she defeated Democratic Party nominee, Layne Diehl, also of Martinsburg, in the general election, making her the youngest elected legislator in the United States. She was elected in the first election in which she was old enough to vote, and won the Republican primary at the age of 17, before she was eligible to vote. Teen Saira Blair reportedly contributed $4,000 to her own campaign to let voters know she was serious.
On Tuesday, the citizens in West Virginia’s 59th District took her seriously as well, delivering Blair a resounding victory over her Democratic opponent for a seat in the state’s House of Delegates.
Blair even left her opponent impressed.
“Quite frankly a 17- or 18-year-old young woman that has put herself out there and won a political campaign has certainly brought some positive press to the state,” 44-year-old attorney Layne Diehl told the Wall Street Journal.”
