Usha Uthup

Usha Uthup was born as Usha Vaidyanath Someshwar Sami Iyer on 7 November 1947 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. She grew up in a Tamil Brahmin family that loved music. Her father, Vaidyanath Someshwar Sami, was a Deputy Commissioner in Bombay Police.As a child, Usha listened to a mix of Western classical, Carnatic, and Hindustani music.

She often tuned in to Radio Ceylon, absorbing melodies from artists like Kishori Amonkar and Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. She studied at St. Agnes High School, Mumbai, where her music teacher encouraged her to play clappers and triangles because her voice did not fit the choir.

Usha Uthup has had a colorful personal life. She was first married to Ramu Iyer, who later passed away. She then married Jani Chacko Uthup, a businessman from Kottayam, Kerala.

She is lovingly called “Didi of Kolkata”, where she currently resides. Her family has always supported her musical journey.

Usha Uthup began her singing career in 1969 at a Chennai nightclub called Nine Gems. Her voice was unique—deep, powerful, and unlike any other female singer of her time. She gained popularity with the song “Shaan Se” from the film Shaan in the 1980s.

She has sung for many successful films including:Her songs often blended Indian pop, jazz, and filmi music, making her a standout performer in the Bollywood entertainment industry.

Usha Uthup has had a long and successful career. She has sung in over 15 Indian languages and performed on international stages. Her music spans genres like R&B, Indian classical, and Western pop.
